Welcome 2018/19 Dancers!

Niata, directly translated, means "youth" and was originally created both to teach our traditional dances – such an important part of our culture and history – to the youth of our community, and to keep that youth connected to one another. Part of our mandate is to also present those dances outside of our community, to share Hellenic culture with all Canadians. We are a volunteer-run folk dance group operating under the Hellenic Society of Calgary. The program is for children from 6-18 years. During its 26 year history, Niata members have performed at a variety of municipal and national events, including the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Its original students now have children of their own in the program. It is one of the longest running Hellenic children’s programs in Calgary.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello Parents and Dancers,

Welcome back for another year of fun and dancing with Niata! I’m excited about taking on the role of Niata Director this year. Niata is over 30 years old and has become an honoured and respected program within our community. Along with all of you, I’m thrilled to continue the tradition. Let me start by passing along registration information for our 2018-2019 season.

Our program will start this Monday, October 29, from 6PM-7PM. Families are asked to arrive at 5:30PM with a completed form for each child enrolling to expedite the registration process. We will be collecting registration forms, tuition fees, and costume deposits. Class will start at 6PM.

Dance groups will initially be separated as follows:

Grade 1 & 2
Grade 3 & 4
Grade 5 & 6
Jr. High
High School

Changes to this outline may be necessary once we establish the number of students in each group. Groups are set based on age/grade. Remember that this is an opportunity for our children to build friendships with others in our community. If you have an issue or concern, please approach me directly and leave the teachers to teach their class.

Details on this year’s fundraising and performances will be coming soon.

Please pass this email onto anyone that may be interested in having their children learn Greek dance. The Niata program is for students between Grades 1-12. As always, classes are Mondays from 6PM-7PM.

Please contact niata@calgaryhellenic.com if you have any comments, questions or require additional information.

The wonderful and dedicated volunteer dance teachers and I look forward to seeing you this Monday for another great year of Greek dancing and friendship!
