Holy (Good) Friday Evening
The Epitafios Service
On Good Friday, Orthodox Christians commemorate the moment Jesus died on the cross. Jesus is taken off the cross and laid in the Epitafios and then the Body of Christ is wrapped with a white sheet (shroud). The priest sprinkles the Sepulcher and the congregation with fragrant water. We no longer lament the sufferings of the Crucified One; we now lament in our own sins. In the evening, the Epitafio is taken outside of the church. This procession represents Jesus entering Hades.
