New Year's Eve 2020

Tickets are just $75 for members and $100 for non-members. All kids will be downstairs for a supervised dinner party from 7-10pm for just $20. Capital Projects Fund

Hellenic Society Casino
The upcoming AGLC Casino will be held on February 2nd and 3rd, 2020, at the Elbow River Casino. Volunteers are needed to ensure that these casino dates run as smoothly as possibly. The funds we receive from volunteering at the casino are integral to the operation and sustainability of our Greek School, as well as other programs. Please click here to sign up!

Met Youth & NIATA will be hosting a Christmas Party from 12:30-3:00pm in the lower community hall. The team has organized numerous Christmas crafts and actives, as well as a GINGERBREAD HOUSE DECORATING COMPETITION! We welcome everyone to join us! We encourage you to dress in Christmas attire- Santa Hats, Christmas Sweaters, Reindeer Ears etc. Light refreshments & snacks will be provided. December 21st - Zoo lights
Met Youth invites all our members to join them on Saturday December 21st for an evening at Zoolights. We will be meeting at the Calgary Zoo Main Entrance at 6:30pm. Tickets can be pre-purchased by clicking here or at the door.

The Golden Ladies are having their monthly meeting on Thursday December 12th @ 6 pm. It will be our Christmas potluck party. Everyone is welcome.

The Hellenic Seniors Society is having their annual potluck Christmas party at the Spruce Cliff Community Centre on Saturday, December 14th at 5 pm. All are welcome. 

Sunday School
Please join us for our short Christmas Nativity Play and caroling on Sunday, December 22nd following Divine Liturgy in the church. All children are welcome to participate that day, as we can always use an extra star for our starry night! We pray that everyone is healthy and that you all have a wonderful Christmas holiday. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!" Luke 2:14

As a way to help our younger congregation, we will be purchasing Orthodox Divine Liturgy books designed for your children to follow along during Liturgy (click here to view). These books will be kept by the Narthex (front entrance of the church) where they can be picked up and returned at the end of service. To help offset the purchase, we'll be selling Vasilopita coins for $15 after church during the month of December.

Maids of Athena
The MOA will be going Christmas caroling on December 23rd! If you would like the girls to stop by your home, please fill out the form by clicking here. Or you can contact Tatiana Tsaprailis (403-874-8700) or Lia Chrisohou (587-434-9096). Deadline is December 15th

Philoptochos
We are having our Philoptochos Christmas Party on December 17th at 6:30 in the Hellenic Community Hall for all Philoptochos members. Ladies, please bring an item to share (salad, main course, dessert or fruit). We are planning on having a fun evening together!

Our new year of membership begins in January. If you are passionate about helping those less fortunate and would like to volunteer some of your time for our community, we would love to have you join Philoptochos. We are looking for new members and need more ladies join us in our efforts to help those in need. We have many activities during the year, therefore there are endless opportunities for you to put your talents to good use. We are hoping to see an influx of new members that can be active and engaged. As the old adage says, more hands make light work. Confessions
The Very Rev. Father Christodoulos Papadeas from Denver will be here to serve the Divine Liturgy and then hear confessions on November 30th  from 11am-1pm and again from 4-8pm. Appointments will not be taken - first come first serve basis. He is fluent in both Greek and English.

ARK Seniors Society
The ARK Seniors Society will be having their AGM on November 30th at the Cretan Society Hall (1814 15 St SW) from 5:30-6:30pm. Immediately following the meeting, elections will be taking place until 7pm. After the Society business has completed, dinner will be served. Sons of Pericles
The Calgary Sons of Pericles are hosting their first annual Dodgeball tournament on December 6th. This inaugural event will be hosted at the Hellenic Community Hall from 5-11pm. Spectator admission is solely by donation. The team fee is $120, with 6-8 players needed for each team. If you do not have a full team, we are organizing free agent teams so everyone can play. Free agents are $20 each. All players are entitled to pizza at the end of the tournament. We have successfully locked down 3 local breweries and will be selling beers all night long. ALL proceeds from this event will be going to the JED Foundation for Mental Health - the National Project for both the Sons and Maids of Athena. MET Youth Calgary
December 1st - Dounut & Coffee Fundraiser
Met Youth Calgary is having a “Texas Donut & Coffee” fundraiser after church on Sunday December 1th. All proceeds will be going to the youth group and their upcoming events. Any youth interested in volunteering, please email orthodoxyouthcalgary@gmail.com.
December 7th - Operation Christmas Child
Open invitation to all members! Join the Met Youth in volunteering at the Operation Christmas Child Distribution Center on Saturday, December 7th. There are two shifts: 9:30am-12pm & 4:00-6:30pm. Thank You!
Thank you to all those that supported the St. Demetrios - 60th Anniversary Glendi. A special note of thanks to our very generous sponsors and to the committee who volunteered their time to plan the party!
From that event, we raised $19 000 towards the Capital Projects campaign. Additionally, we have raised another $95 000 in donations. Currently, we have raised $114 000! Thank you to all of the donors for their generous support! 

Our next big fundraisers for the Capital Projects campaign are New Years Eve 2020 and the 12th Annual Poker Night! Volunteers are needed for the NYE Party. If you are interested in helping out, please email Penelope at admin@calgaryhellenic.com by November 20th. Stay tuned for details on both events!

Thank you to all for making the Annual Philoptochos Bazaar a success! We want to thank all the generous businesses and individuals who supported us through donations of food, general supplies, baking, cooking, craft table items, silent auction items, and monetary donations. We also want to thank all the individuals who volunteered their time and worked hard to plan the bazaar, prepare food/prepare baking, perform dances at the bazaar, and do shifts. Philoptochos
THIS WEEKEND is the Annual Philoptochos Bazaar on November 1, 2 & 3. Come out and support Philoptochos during those days as this is our biggest fundraiser of the year!  With the funds from the Bazaar, we are able to help those in real need in Calgary.  We also are able to support families in need who come to us for help.  When you help us, you are helping them. At the Bazaar, we will have delicious Greek food and desserts, crafts/housewares, a silent auction, music, and some entertainment as well. MESSAGE FROM FATHER PETER
On Thursday, October 10th, we will be hosting our 5thAnnual Hellenic Golf Tournament. Thank you to all that have registered and to everyone who has sponsored this event!
Funds raised will go towards the Hellenic Community of Calgary and Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids. The Hellenic Community of Calgary runs various programs and capital projects throughout the year. Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids prepares lunches for over 4,400 of Calgary’s children attending school without a lunch every day and have over 600 volunteers. Funds will go to help the Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids lunch program.
Every year, I look forward to our annual golf tournament. It is a fun and rewarding event where members of the Greek and Calgary communities come together as one to fundraise for important causes and especially this year, where you can help provide lunches for kids at school.
This year I will not be attending the golf tournament as I will be in Kingston Ontario at the annual clergy conference. Please accept my sincere regrets for my absence. 
I’m sure it will be a great success! The Golf Committee has been working hard over the summer planning and organizing this event. I encourage you all to register for golf and for those who aren’t able, you can register for a fantastic dinner, stay for the silent auction, a live auction and much more!

There will be a question and answer period, moderated by Ms. Katerina Sokou, Visiting Scholar, Elliott School of International Affairs, GW and Washington DC Correspondent, KATHIMERINI Greek Daily and SKAI TV-Foreign Affairs Analyst Washington, District of Columbia. All proceeds from this event will be going to SOS Children’s Villages in Greece. For tickets, please click here.

OXI Day Celebration in Edmonton
Members, you are invited to attend a celebration in Edmonton on Monday, October 28th 2019 to commemorate OXI Day! There will be a full day of events which includes a lunch, a flag raising ceremony at the Alberta Legislature, and the opportunity to sit in on Question Period. 
There will be no charge for attending. A bus will be rented so that all participants will arrive and depart Edmonton at the same time.
The deadline to reserve your spot is Wednesday, October 2nd at 12PM. Seating is limited so please contact Diane Polesello at dapolesello@shaw.ca as soon as possible if you’d like to attend. We apologize for the short notice but we just received confirmation about this on Friday evening! 
This event is being put on by the Hellenic Community of Calgary in conjunction with Minister Dimitrios Nicolaides.

Niata
Welcome back for another year of fun and dancing with Niata! The Niata dance program teaches our children about their Greek culture,the history behind the dances and the regional costumes, and an opportunity to experience firsthand the joy of dancing Greek...OPA!!!
Our program will start Saturday, October 5 from 12:30PM-1:30PM. Children who attendGreek school and are staying for Niata are encouraged to bring something to eatand will also be supervised by parent volunteers for the half hour in between. Families are asked to arrive at 12 noon with a completed form for each child enrolling to expedite the registration process. We will be collecting registration forms, tuition fees (if non-member), and costume deposits. Class will start at 12:30PM.

Pyrros Dimas is visiting Greek School on Wednesday October 2nd at 5 pm. Come and meet our three times gold Olympic athlete in weight lifting ,prior to the screening of the "Freedom Besieged". Hope to see everyone there!

Sunday School
Sunday School will begin again on October 6th. All children ages 3+ are welcome! 
Remember, Sunday School is the first and third Sunday of every month following communion. We are also looking for more teachers. If you are available even once a month, please contact Father Peter at Fr.Peter@shaw.ca. Come check out the new activities we have planned - see you in October!

St. Demetrios 60th Anniversary Glendi

Niata
A reminder to everyone that Niata will now be on Saturdays! Commencing in October, classes will be after Greek School from 12:30 - 1:30PM. There will be supervision provided for students attending Greek School during the half hour break before Niata begins. 
We look forward to having more of our younger members involved and welcome back all of our dancers that have been part of Niata over the years.

Freedom Besieged - Documentary Screening
On October 2nd, The Hellenic Initiative (THI) of Canada has teamed up with the Hellenic Community of Calgary to host the screening of Freedom Besieged, a documentary based on the political and economic situation in Greece and the effects on specifically, the youth in Greece. In addition, celebrated Greek Olympic athlete, Pyrros Dimas will be here! There will be a question and answer period, moderated by Ms. Katerina Sokou, Visiting Scholar, Elliott School of International Affairs, GW and Washington DC Correspondent, KATHIMERINI Greek Daily and SKAI TV-Foreign Affairs Analyst Washington, District of Columbia. All proceeds from this event will be going to SOS Children’s Villages in Greece. For tickets, please click here.

60th Anniversary Fundraiser Dinner

This was a decision made by the current community council after many years of flat tuition, to bring the Greek School budget to a break even point. The registration package is available online by clicking

Philoptochos
IMPORTANT: The Ladies of Philoptochos, which is made up solely of volunteers, will take a well deserved break for the month of July to spend time with their family and friends. Please note that we will NOT be hosting coffee hour after church services for July. Contact President Kathy Vlismas at (403) 836-3665 for any memorial or funeral fellowships. We will resume again on August 4th.

We want to thank everyone who supported our fundraising initiatives this year, including donations from restaurants and individuals, and all those who gave their time to volunteer for us on Sundays and for various occasions throughout the year. We appreciate all your kindness and generosity. Have a wonderful summer and God bless you all!

CALL OUT FOR COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS
We are looking for members of our community to assist with our fundraising goals this years. Two of the events we have in mind, and need committee support with are:

- Community Golf Tournament in September (date TBD)

Thank you to everyone who attended Niata’s Greek Night last Saturday. A special thank you to Kathy Desaultes and Angela Kotopoulos for their dedication over the last 14 years with both the costumes and the Adult Dance Group! We also look forward to welcoming back our director Effy Klironomos for next year and to thank her for her hard work this past year and that of the volunteer teachers;  Lia Chrisohou, Froso Kantzas, Kassie Konicki, Nefeli Kotopoulos, Georgia Landgraf, Lucas Desautels, Athena Manolakos, Elias Manolakos, Evangelos Manolakos.

Request for Myrofores & Angels - Parents who have daughters aged 7 and upwho would like to be Myrofores or Angels during the evening service for Good Friday, (April 26th) are asked to sign up by clicking here and to read the information on the form.

Please take some time to reflect as a family about Lent/Σαρακοστή. What are your goals during Lent in order to get closer to God? As parents, you can model as well as discuss your goals with your children. In addition, what acts of kindness can you do as a family to follow Jesus's teachings?

Open House
The Community Council invites all members to an OPEN HOUSE on Sunday, April 14th at 5:30 to 7:30pm to view the renderings for the new church steps.

Easter Sunday
The Community will be hosting a celebration after the Agapi
 service on Easter Sunday at 2PM! Palm Sunday Lunch

The Philoptochos ladies are going to be selling Easter Tsourekia once again on April 21st! We will also be making Koulouria as well. We strongly encourage people to pre-order, as the Tsourekia sell out quickly. If you would like to pre-order, please call the Philoptochos President, Ms. Kathy Vlismas at 403-836-3665 or Mrs. Kiki Doikas at 403-246-8579. Tsourekia will be $10 each and the Koulouria will be $5 for a package of 10. Kali Sarakosti!    

Easter Baskets
Once again, we are selling Easter baskets for our young members this year! Each basket is $50 and will contain an Easter Story book, an Easter activity book, a Labatha for Good Friday and Holy Saturday, Koulourakia, plus a couple of extra goodies! All proceeds will go towards our Church. Limited quantities available. 

Sunday School
Request for Myrofores & Angels - Parents who have daughters aged 7 and upwho would like to be Myrofores or Angels during the evening service for Good Friday, (April 26th) are asked to sign up by clicking here and to read the information on the form.

Please take some time to reflect as a family about Lent/Σαρακοστή. What are your goals during Lent in order to get closer to God? As parents, you can model as well as discuss your goals with your children. In addition, what acts of kindness can you do as a family to follow Jesus's teachings? One act of kindness we can do, is help to make palm crosses for Palm Sunday during the Met Youth Lenten retreat on April 20th. Check out Met Youth’s information for more details.

Save the date! Met Youth Calgary is hosting their 4thAnnual Youth Lenten Retreat on Lazarus Saturday - April 20th, from 12-4PM! This year we will be hosting "Easter Olympics", with fun activities to be revealed later. As with previous years we will be making palm crosses and a lent friendly lunch will be provided. We hope you all can join us on Lazarus Saturday at the Hellenic Community for a day of learning and fun! All ages welcome!

Easter Sunday
The Community will be hosting a celebration after the Agapi service on Easter Sunday! Details will be on the website and emailed to members this coming week.

Philoptochos
The Philoptochos ladies are going to be selling Easter Tsourekia once again towards the beginning of April. We will also be making Koulouria as well. We are strongly encouraging people to pre-order, as the Tsourekia sell out quickly. If you would like to pre-order, please call the Philoptochos President, Ms. Kathy Vlismas at 403-836-3665 or Mrs. Kiki Doikas at 403-246-8579. Tsourekia will be $10 each and the Koulouria will be $5 for a package of 10. Please note there will be no meeting in March. Our next Philoptochos meeting will be April 16 at 7pm. We hope to see you there! Kali Sarakosti!

Greek School
Thank you to everyone who attended our celebration for Greek Independence Day. Your enthusiastic participation and applause made this day special. Hronia Polla! Please keep in mind that there will be no classes on 
March 27 and 30  thth due to the Spring Break. Cenovus Energy has generously donated audiovisual equipment that will enhance students’ learning experience in Greek School, a big Thank you for the donation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for all youth groups across Canada to get together for a weekend to learn about Orthodoxy, meet other Greek youth from across Canada, and have lots of fun! This weekend conference is open to youth between ages 16-30! We would love to have youth delegates from Calgary attend such a unique opportunity. Daughters of Penelope
The Calgary DOP will be hosting the 'That's the Spirit!' wine and beer tasting event on Saturday, 
March 2nd benefiting CP (Cerebral Palsy) Kids! Bring your dancing shoes as well, as there will be a live '80s cover band! Tickets are $65 and be sure to purchase yours early, as this event will be sold out! Email thatsthespiritop19@gmail.comfor tickets and more information. This is an 18+ event. 

Maids of Athena
The Calgary MOA are putting on a bake sale and coffee on Sunday, 
March 17th after church. The girls will be preparing all sorts of goodies and will also have some Lenten treats. The proceeds will be benefiting the National Project, Xamogelo Tou Paidiou. For information on this charity, visit www.hamogelo.gr/gr/en/home.

Greek School
It is our reporting period here at the Greek School. Report cards will be sent home on March 
2nd and March 6th. Our students will welcome the first month of Spring by making “Martis Bracelets” on March 2nd. Golden Ladies
The Golden Ladies are having a meeting on February 14th at 6 pm. We will be cutting our vasilopita as it is our first meeting of the year and we will celebrate Valentine’s Day together. All new and old members are welcome to attend!

Request for Candidates
The current Community Council has 4 vacant positions and as per our bylaws, the council is able to appoint members to fill these vacancies. The vacant positions are:
     -  2 positions for a 1 year term
     -  2 positions for a 3 year term

Please consider offering your time, skills and talents to support our community. We hope you will consider volunteering and if you are interested, please put forth a letter of intent to Diane Polesello at dapolsello@shaw.ca, outlining your interest and areas in which you would like to contribute. The deadline to apply is January 31st, 2019

11th Annual Greek Poker Night
On behalf of the Poker Night Committee and the Community Council, we would like to extend our greatest appreciation to all who attended this years' very successful event! A big thank-you to all of the donors and sponsors and all of the wonderful volunteers as well! 

Greek School
What a great start of 2019! Greek School got the lucky coin during our Vasilopita cutting. The winners of the Christmas door Contest enjoyed their prize, courtesy of Gus’s Pizza. Thank you for donating pizzas for both Wednesday and Saturday classes, it is much appreciated! We would also like to extend our gratitude to Cenovus Energy for the stationery materials donated to our School. Cenovus is an integrated oil company headquartered in Calgary. Cenovus is known for being a responsible developer of Canada's oil sands, with an emphasis on innovation, safety and environmental stewardship The company's business strategy focuses on creating value through the development its oil sands assets, achieving predictable, reliable performance and maintaining financial resilience. Adult classes are being offered on Tuesday and Wednesdays evening. Bible Study & Wine & Cheese Event
Join Father Peter and Met Youth Calgary on Wednesday January 30th at 6PM in the Church for wine and cheese along with an open Q&A Bible Study discussion session! Please submit questions you would like answered via the Facebook event, Instagram or by emailing orthodoxyouthcalgary@gmail.com. This event is open to EVERYONE - young and old! There will be wine, cheese and light appetizers as well as juice and refreshments for the youth. We hope to see you all there!

11th Annual Greek Poker Night
Just 2 weeks away! Plans are being finalized for this years Greek Poker Night, happening on January 26th! This years event is in memory of Vic Alefantis, who started this with others 10 years ago, while he on the Community Council. This years proceeds will be donated to Scleroderma Canada and to our Community. Registrations can be made through the online portal by clicking here. Interested in sponsoring this event?
